Cragmaw Castle

The ruined castle in the Neverwinter Wood that serves as the stronghold of the Cragmaw goblin tribe. Current location of the captured Gundren Rockseeker.

Overview

Cragmaw Castle was, centuries ago, a small frontier fortification built by an old human noble house and abandoned when the family failed out. Today it is half a ruin — collapsed towers, a broken outer wall, a partially-intact great hall — and entirely the property of the Cragmaw tribe, who have unified several local goblin warbands under a hobgoblin warlord called King Grol.

The castle sits deep in the Neverwinter Wood, somewhere northeast of Phandalin. The party does not yet know the exact location. Sildar Hallwinter is working on it. Likely ways to learn:

  1. Capture a Cragmaw scout — preferably from a hunting party encountered on the road.
  2. Find correspondence at Tresendar Manor that references the castle.

Why The Party Will Go

  • To rescue Gundren Rockseeker (their original employer; the entire campaign began escorting his wagon).
  • To recover the map to Wave Echo Cave that Gundren was carrying when he was captured.
  • To learn who is paying the Cragmaw goblins to do this — and why.
