Toblen Stonehill — Innkeeper of the Stonehill
Friendly young human innkeeper, originally from Triboar. Owns and operates the Stonehill Inn, the only proper lodging in Phandalin.
At a Glance
- Race / Profession: Human, late twenties, innkeeper. Came to Phandalin to prospect; ended up running a tavern instead.
- Where to find him: Behind the bar at the Stonehill Inn from breakfast through last call.
- Family: Wife Trilena (the cook; sharper than Toblen), three small children — including Pip, who is best friends with Carp Alderleaf.
Personality
Toblen is the warm, careful man you want greeting you when you arrive in a strange town. He remembers names. He pours generously. He is — visibly — afraid of the Redbrands, because they have made very clear that his wife and children are reachable if he speaks too loudly.
He will speak to the party freely if they sit down at the bar. He will not speak about the Redbrands until the room is empty, and even then, only quietly, and only to people he believes can do something about them.
What He Knows
- Rumors of every adventurer who has passed through Phandalin in the last six months. He is a goldmine of low-level intel.
- The Redbrands hassle every business in town except, oddly, the Miner’s Exchange — Toblen doesn’t know why.
- Thel Dendrar the woodcarver stood up to the Redbrands a tenday ago and was murdered for it. His wife Mirna and their two children have not been seen since. Toblen suspects the worst.
- Carp Alderleaf has been bragging to his son Pip about a “secret tunnel” he found in the woods. Toblen does not know what to make of it.
- A scholar named Gwyn Oresong — sister of his bartender Elsa — is on her way to Phandalin. She arrives soon.
