What He’s Been Up To
Carp has — by his own breathless account — found a secret tunnel in the woods east of the orchard, behind a tangle of brambles and a boulder. He went in ten steps before a rat scared him, but he says he heard adult voices coming from deeper in. Mean voices, he insists.
He has not told anyone but his mother and Pip. He has been pestering both of them to let him go back and explore further. His mother has very firmly told him no.
