Thel Dendrar
Local woodcarver. Deceased. Murdered in the streets of Phandalin by the Redbrands approximately one tenday before the party arrived in town.
What Happened
Thel was a quiet, well-liked craftsman who carved sign-boards, religious icons, and the occasional fine piece of furniture. He had a wife (Mirna Dendrar) and two children (Nars, Nilsa). His shop was on the south side of the town square.
A group of Redbrand ruffians came into the shop one afternoon and began intimidating Mirna — making lewd comments, breaking small pieces of his work. Thel, who had never struck a man in his life, came out from the back room and told them to leave.
They beat him to death in the street in front of half the town. They took his body, carried it east toward Tresendar Manor, and were not seen with it again. Within an hour they returned for Mirna and the children, who have not been seen since.
The town has not buried Thel because there is no body to bury. There is a small carved marker leaning against the wall of his shop. People have left flowers there.
Why It Matters
Thel’s murder is the moment when the town stopped denying the Redbrand problem and started waiting for somebody — anybody — to do something about it.
It is also the moment the party can point to when they need a reason to act. “Tell me again why I shouldn’t kill every Redbrand I see,” “Because of Thel Dendrar.” That’s how the conversation goes.
