Wyvern Tor
A prominent rocky crag in the hills east of Phandalin, named for the wyverns that used to nest on its peak. Currently the camp of a small orc raiding party that has been hitting caravans on the Triboar Trail and harassing farms along the eastern road.
Overview
Wyvern Tor is a single tall stone outcropping rising from a stretch of rough hill country roughly a day’s ride east of Phandalin. The summit is bare rock, the slopes are scrub and sparse pine, and a series of natural caves in the southern face have been used historically by every kind of large creature looking for a defensible roost: bears, wyverns, ogres, and — most recently — orcs.
The wyverns the tor was named for have not been seen for two generations. The orcs moved in roughly six months ago.
The Current Threat
The orc band at Wyvern Tor has been:
- Raiding caravans on the Triboar Trail.
- Butchering livestock from outlying farms.
- Intimidating travelers in the eastern hills.
They have not yet attacked Phandalin itself. Local opinion in town is divided between “they will, eventually” and “they’re getting fewer the longer the winter goes on.” Nobody has actually been up to count them.
The Bounty
Harbin Wester has posted a standing town bounty: 100gp for clearing the orc presence at Wyvern Tor. The bounty has been posted for nearly two months without takers.
Daran Edermath privately considers 100gp insultingly low for the work and will tell the party so. He suggests negotiating Harbin up.
