Newton

Figurine of Wondrous Power (Jeweled Newt) — wondrous item, uncommon

A newt the size of a thumb, worked in silver-veined stone and set with tiny gem-chip eyes. It is cool to the touch, always slightly damp in a way no one can explain, and it is the party’s most beloved possession.

Recovered from the bugbear Klarg’s hoard in Cragmaw Hideout, identified in Phandalin as a Figurine of Wondrous Power, and named Newton by unanimous acclaim (04 - Blood in the Square).

The Item

A figurine of wondrous power is a statuette of a beast small enough to fit in a pocket. If you use an action to speak the command word and throw the figurine to a point on the ground within 60 feet of you, the figurine becomes a living creature. If the space where the creature would appear is occupied by other creatures or objects, or if there isn’t enough space for the creature, the figurine doesn’t become a creature.

The creature is friendly to you and your companions. It understands your languages and obeys your spoken commands. If you issue no commands, the creature defends itself but takes no other actions.

Jeweled Newt (Uncommon). This jeweled statuette of a newt can become a newt for up to 10 minutes, using the statistics of a frog. The newt can breathe both air and water, has darkvision out to 30 feet, and can squeeze through a space as narrow as 1 inch wide.

While the newt is within 100 feet of you, you can use an action to see through its eyes and hear what it hears until the start of your next turn. During this time, you are blinded and deafened with regard to your own senses.

The newt reverts to its figurine form at the end of the duration, or early if it drops to 0 hit points or if you use an action to speak the command word again while touching it. Once the figurine has been used, it can’t be used again until the next dawn.
