The Sleeping Giant — Tap House of the Redbrands
A squat stone tap house on the east end of Phandalin, near the trail out to Tresendar Manor. Unofficial headquarters of the Redbrands.
Overview
The Sleeping Giant was a marginal tap house even before the Redbrands claimed it. It is a single-story building of grey fieldstone with a low porch, a heavy door, and three small windows shuttered against the light. The roof is sod-and-tar and sags in two places. The sign above the door — a crudely-painted slumbering giant cradling a tankard — has not been repainted in a decade.
The owner is a wiry, sour-faced halfling named Grista. Grista was a perfectly serviceable tavern-keeper before the Redbrands moved in. Since then, she has stopped bothering to clean. She lives in a back room and serves whoever sits down without comment. Local opinion is that she has been beaten enough times to stop having opinions.
Why The Town Avoids It
On any given day, a handful of Redbrand thugs can be found on the front porch or inside, drinking and looking for trouble. They catcall passersby, make threatening remarks to anyone who gets too close, and generally behave like men who have never faced real consequences.
Approaching the Sleeping Giant is a good way to get into a confrontation. Decent folk in Phandalin have stopped going entirely. Even other Redbrands’ own visitors describe the place as “the bad room” and prefer to do their business elsewhere.
